Includes appendix listing his students in Dayton and Coppei school districts in Columbia County, Washington Territory (1881-1882), genealogies of the Jackson and Irwin families, and typescript of Diary of a Cattle Drive from La Grande, Oregon to Cheyenne, Wyoming, in 1876.

William Emsley Jackson left Illinois with his parents and came West in 1873, settling first in the Grand Ronde valley of eastern Oregon. He returned to Plymouth, IL in 1876 to continue his education, and after teaching in Illinois, returned to accept a teaching position at Dayton, Washington Territory in 1880.
